Operational Methodology for Fires in Buildings with Solar Panels
Two-day training aimed at increasing safety and security in firefighting i properties with solar panels and battery storage. The course is well anchored in proven experience. In the fall of 2024, the Swedish Agency for Community Safety and Preparedness (MSB) conducted tests and rescue scenarios in Glava Energy Center's solar park, ahead of a new national guidance for Sweden's rescue services.
Background
The interest in installing solar panels is growing rapidly. Fires in buildings with solar panels require extensive knowledge of technology, risk assessment, and appropriate operational measures. This training provides increased expertise, confidence, and safety in combating fires involving solar installations and battery storage. The course is supported by organizations such as Länsförsäkringar, the Swedish Electrical Safety Agency, MSB (Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency), Svensk Solenergi, and various rescue services.
Target Audience
Rescue services.
Course Goals
After completing the course, participants will be able to select appropriate operational measures and perform risk assessments based on both the fire site and the installed technology. Participants who pass the training will receive a course certificate from Glava Energy Center.
Course Content
The two-day training takes place at Glava Energy Center in Hillringsberg, Glava, near Arvika. The course covers:
- Introduction to solar panel and battery technology
- Structure and components of solar installations
- Structure and components of battery storage systems
- Rescue operations with electrical and chemical risks
- Identification and assessment of risks in solar and battery installations
- Arc flash demonstrations – practical testing
- Presentation of installation examples in the Solar Park
- Operational methods with risk minimization
- Case studies and experiences from previous rescue operations
- Input for continued work at participants' own station.
The training is based on MSB's guide, "Operational Methodology for Fires in Buildings with Solar Installations," which has been welcomed by organizations such as Länsförsäkringar, the Swedish Electrical Safety Agency, MSB, Svensk Solenergi, and the Rescue Service in Gothenburg.
