Knowledge of flexibility opens new business opportunities
Glava Energy Center is now launching two new training courses on flexibility markets – a digital introduction and an in-depth course held on site in Glava, western Värmland. The courses are aimed at both grid operators and companies that want to understand how flexibility can become part of their business while also contributing to a more sustainable power system. The instructor is Darijan Jelica, flexibility expert and CEO of Flexia Consulting AB, with experience from starting and running several flexibility markets in Sweden.
– I took on my first flexibility project in 2022 and quickly realized that this was something I was passionate about and skilled at. Since then, I have helped several grid operators start their flexibility journeys to counter capacity shortages and enable the green transition. A year ago, I founded Flexia Consulting with this very vision, says Darijan Jelica, who has, among other things, been involved in starting flexibility markets in Mölndal and Kinnekulle and in scaling up the flexibility market in Gothenburg.
Opportunities for both grid operators and customers
Glava Energy Center is now offering two new training courses on flexibility markets, with Darijan Jelica as instructor. The courses are available at different levels – from a short digital introduction to in-depth full-day sessions – and are relevant to a wide range of participants, he emphasizes.
– Flexibility is a powerful tool to counter capacity shortages in our power grids. For grid operators, it means being able to connect more customers without slowing down the energy transition. For companies and other grid customers, it can mean new revenues – by selling flexibility, they can both make money and help solve a critical societal challenge, he says.
Based on project results
The courses build on the Glava Energy Center project Methodology for Flexibility in the Grid, funded by the research company Energiforsk.
– We have seen that knowledge levels vary when it comes to flexibility. Industries often know their processes very well, but they have not always considered how these could be scheduled differently to provide external services. For grid operators, it often means exploring new ground and testing new solutions and models, says David Olsson, Technical Project Manager at Glava Energy Center.
A win-win for the energy transition
The hope is that these courses will help more people understand the opportunities with flexibility – and in the long run contribute to both business value and societal benefit.
– Actors with flexible resources gain the opportunity to implement a new business model that generates revenue while also making more efficient use of the grid. These are win-win solutions that strengthen the energy transition and society at large, says David Olsson.

Glossary – What do these terms mean?
Capacity challenge: When the power grid does not have enough capacity to transmit all the electricity that customers want to use or produce. This can create bottlenecks and delays in new connections.
Flexibility market: A marketplace where companies or individuals can offer temporary reductions or increases in their electricity use or production. The grid operator can buy this “flexibility” to balance the grid and avoid capacity problems.
Flex: Short for flexibility in the power system. Refers to temporarily adjusting electricity use or production to support the grid.
Flexibility provider: An actor that offers flexibility, for example a company that can shift electricity use over time or a battery that can store and deliver electricity when needed.
Grid operator (DSO): The company responsible for operating and developing the electricity grid in a specific geographic area.
