New roof concepts can release the solar potential in apartment buildings

The solar cell company Solisten's new installation concept for flat roofs is now available in Glava Energy Center's test park. There are two roof solutions that can release the solar potential in older apartment buildings.

- This is an interesting roof solution for energy renovation of Sweden's million-dollar program. That makes the venture extra exciting, and we are happy to be able to show off the concepts in Glava Energy Center's test park, says Magnus Nilsson, CEO of Glava Energy Center.

No location conflict with other roof objects

From the mid-1960s to the mid-1970s, over a million homes were built in Sweden, in what is known as the Swedish million programme. The properties are now in need of energy efficiency improvements and in that context the roof surfaces are considered to have the potential to provide large amounts of solar energy. But to accommodate solar panels among other roof objects, such as fan and ventilation hoods, new mounting concepts for solar panels on flat roofs are needed.

- Solisten's roof solutions are such that they can release the million program's solar potential, says David Larsson, CEO of Solisten, which is one of Glava Energy Center's member companies.

He has built two of Solisten's assembly concepts – Miljontak and Pergola – in Glava Energy Center's test park. David Larsson describes Miljontak as an "extended fan room" covered with solar cells and Pergola as a sparse solar cell assembly for simplified snow shoveling.

- Since there will be no space conflict with other roof objects, more solar panels can be placed on the roofs. At the same time, both roof maintenance and snow management are facilitated, he says.

Want to find pilot customers

The roof solutions have been developed by David Larsson within the framework of the Taklyftet project, which is financed by the Swedish Energy Agency with the aim of further developing different mounting concepts with raised mounting of solar cells on roofs. The work continues until April 2023.

- Now I am looking for pilot customers for the next step in the development. I hope to get more and new stakeholders by showing off the concepts here in Glava Energy Center's test park, says David Larsson.

The Glava Energy Center's test park in Hillringsberg in Glava outside Arvika has many visitors via the center's study visits, events and training courses. This, in turn, can mean great value for the member companies that showcase their system solutions and concepts via the Glava Energy Center.

- The various test, demo and training systems in the test park are shown to a wide range of people at our activities. In addition to the direct advertising value, we also have a test infrastructure where we measure solar radiation and solar energy production, which means that you can also get independent test values from your system, says Magnus Nilsson.
