GränsEnergi – Innovative Solutions for the Future of Energy Supply

The three-year project GränsEnergi aims to develop local energy communities for residential and industrial areas in the border region of Värmland, Dalarna, Innlandet, and Akershus. Glava Energy Center is the project owner and leads the initiative together with Swedish partners Karlstad University and Dalarna Science Park, and Klosser Innovasjon is the Norwegian project leader in collaboration with Fornybar Utvikling.

The project will develop local energy communities by utilizing research-based knowledge, innovative technology, and new interaction models to create a smarter cross-border region. The work is based on close cooperation between Sweden and Norway and is funded by participating organisations, Region Värmland and Region Dalarna, with co-financing from the EU through Interreg Sweden-Norway.

Energy Communities

An energy community is an association of members who produce, consume, store, and/or sell energy within the community. The goal is to give citizens greater control over their electricity consumption, which can lead to environmental, economic, and social benefits.

What's the Project Aim?

The overall goal of the project is to utilize research-based knowledge, innovative technology, and new interaction models to lay the foundation for the development of local energy communities. This will lead to: Improved access to energy, increased social resilience, a more democratized power system and enhanced competitiveness with new job opportunities in the border region of Värmland, Dalarna, Innlandet, and Akershus. The project will result in 3-4 concrete concepts for energy communities. The project's specific objectives are to:

  • Develop insights into opportunities, challenges, and barriers related to energy production and local energy communities.
  • Enhance interregional research and innovation capacity by jointly exploring new business and interaction models within the energy system.
  • Collaborate with businesses and local communities to develop innovative concepts and solutions for local energy communities to increase energy availability and efficiency.
  • Continuously share results and developed concepts with target groups and project stakeholders to gradually increase knowledge and capacity.

How is the Project Executed?

The project consists of four work packages with sub-activities:

  • Work package 1: Mapping and analyzing framework conditions in Norway and Sweden.
  • Work package 2: Energy dialogue and innovations.
  • Work package 3: Developing concepts and pilots for innovative solutions for local energy communities.
  • Work package 4: Project management, administration, and dissemination of results.

All project activities involve researchers from Karlstad University, ensuring a strong knowledge foundation.
